On the 20th of April 2021 a Webinar was held on how some important European and EU funded initiatives contribute to meet the overall goals of the Transport White paper.
The webinar, that was organised by Sintef Ocean and moderated by De Vlaamse Waterweg, focused on the following questions:
- How will automation and autonomy contribute to efficient and sustainable inland navigation cargo transport in Europe?
- What are the challenges and what are the solutions that these initiatives propose?
AUTOSHIP, together with the EU Projects AEGIS, NOVIMAR and AVATAR were presented. The company Seafar also held a presentation on their extensive testing experience with automated shipping.
After the presentations a lively panel discussion was held on the challenges and opportunities that automated shipping can bring. Some of the most import outcomes were: Automated shipping is the future. A lot still needs to be figured out, but at the same time a lot has already been realised. Many positive and amazed reactions came on the progress that has already been made regarding automated shipping. Some of the challenges we are facing is the legislation that needs to be adapted to allow automated shipping and the need for international standardized test procedures for automated vessels. With the enthusiasm we witnessed from the audience, we are ready to tackle these challenges and sail further into the future of automated shipping!
